England won an absolutely thrilling friendly against deadly rivals Argentina in Geneva thanks to two stunning late headers from Michael Owen - and boy was it exciting!

There can never have been a more breathtaking, thrilling, end to end friendly match in recent international history. And England ended it unbelievable style.

The Three Lions looked to be heading for a 2-1 defeat despite an impressive attacking performance against a side ranked second in the world.

But, with just a few minutes to go, Owen headed home an equaliser from a Gerrard cross. And then, amazingly, he repeated the trick from a Joe Cole centre to win the game in the most dramatic fashion possible.

So where do you start?

It’s fair to say that England were put on the back foot early on as Argentina surged forward, forcing Paul Robinson into a series of fine saves.

He used both hands to push a Riquelme shot over the bar, raced out to block at Tevez shot and then spectacularly saved a fine Rodriquez volley, all in the first minutes.

He later tipped at Tevez effort over the bar and regularly came out to claim crosses and prevent England from crumbling under the pressure from their South American opponents.

There was so much going on in a thrilling encounter that at times it was hard to keep up, and both sides had early goals disallowed.

Michael Owen was pulled up for offside when he headed home a Rooney pass, and Luke Young was relieved when the whistle went for a foul after he had diverted the ball into his own net.

England also had a penalty claim turned down when Rooney thundered down the left and was stopped by Javier Zanetti.

And they almost scored with the move of the match when Gerrard’s superb pass with the outside of his foot sent Rooney away - but the Manchester United striker’s deft flick came back off the post when it seemed he had scored in sublime fashion.

The opening goal of the game, however, went to Argentina, who were a non-stop threat all evening.

And it came after 35 minutes when the ever-dangerous Rodriquez turned Bridge on the right and crossed low for Hernan Crespo to pounce from close range.

England’s response was quick - they equalised four minutes later when Beckham cleverly headed down a high ball for Rooney to calmly and deliberately steer the ball home from 12 yards out.

But that was never going to be the end of the matter with both teams determined to attack and both managers intent on victory.

Juan-Pablo Sorin had already seen his diving header smothered on the line by Robinson and Lampard had missed a good chance when Argentina regained the lead after 53 minutes.

Paul Konchesky, who had replaced Bridge at half-time, couldn’t reach Walter Samuel from a Riquelme chip - and the defender’s looping header ended up in the net despite the efforts of Ferdinand and Robinson.

The goal was initially credited to Ayala, but replays seemed to show the ball had crossed the line with no help from anyone.

Once again, though, a determined Three Lions side refused to lie down and with 20 minutes to go, keeper Abbondanzieri made a superb double save, first from Beckham’s free-kick and then from Owen’s close-range follow-up.

Rooney’s superb chip just failed to beat the keeper and then, in a grandstand finish, Owen struck - twice. What a night!
