This weekend, Sven-Goran Eriksson watched Tottenham v Middlesbrough on Saturday and Chelsea v Arsenal on Sunday. His assistant Tord Grip attended Charlton on Saturday before joining Sven at Stamford Bridge 24 hours later.

Didier Drogba stole the spotlight from some very expensive debutants at Stamford Bridge against Arsenal - but also paid tribute to England's Frank Lampard.

In front of England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, Chelsea made one of the most expensive substitutions of all time when they brought on £24m man Mikael Essien and England’s £21m winger Shaun Wright-Phillips for their home debuts today.

The move was designed to break the deadlock in an extremely tight game – and it worked. But it was another substitute - striker Drogba – who scored the winner, taking advantage of a slice of luck to force home a clever free-kick from Three Lions star Lampard.

Drogba paid tribute to Lampard by saying: "It was a great ball by Lampard – I was a little bit lucky but 1-0 is a good result. Both teams played well."

Three Lions star Lampard added: "That’s a massive win for us. We were lucky last week against Wigan so we wanted to prove ourselves against one of our main rivals. The lads were brilliant all game.

"It’s just three points and there’s a long way to go but we thoroughly deserved to win and well done to Didier for coming on and scoring. We’ve got six points on the board and got one over Arsenal. We have a tough game against West Brom next and we have to keep up the standards we showed last year."

Wright-Phillips, who missed England’s trip to Denmark in midweek through injury clearly enjoyed the occasion, along with John Terry. But Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole, who was solid and combative in defence, had to accept defeat.

On Saturday, Sven had received a boost when Jermain Defoe proved what an outstanding striker he is by helping Tottenham to beat Middlesbrough 2-0.

The 23-year-old picked the ball up in the centre circle, raced away from Gareth Southgate and unleashed a 25-yard piledriver after just four minutes.

"We needed something special and Jermain gave us that," said his manager Martin Jol. "That is why he is always a danger man for everyone and he's capable of scoring from any position."

Michael Carrick also impressed for Spurs, playing a creative role in midfield alongside Edgar Davids.

England’s assistant coach Tord Grip was at the Valley to see Darren Bent, score the only goal in Charlton’s win over newly promoted Wigan.

Addicks boss Alan Curbishley said: "Every player wants to play for his country and I didn't see anything wrong with him being called up. He's an England U21 international and he was just upgraded. I said at the start of pre-season that I wanted to bring players in with enthusiasm and Darren is the first in and the last out at training."
