Argentina announcement
Friday, 19 August 2005.
The FA today announced that, subject to England not playing in a World Cup play-off fixture, Sven-Goran Eriksson's team will play an international match against Argentina in November.
The match is scheduled to be played on Saturday, 12 November at the Stade de Geneve in Geneva, Switzerland. Kick-off time will be confirmed at a later
date.
England have met Argentina 12 times since their first meeting at Wembley in May 1951, with a thirteenth match - played two years later - abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.
Those matches include five World Cup Finals games, the first of which was a group match at the 1962 edition in Chile. Walter Winterbottom's side won 3-1 with Ron Flowers, Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Charlton scoring.
Four years later England again beat the South Americans, this time in a quarter-final match. Geoff Hurst got the only goal of the game when he got on the end of Martin Peters' cross to head past the Argentinian 'keeper.
In 1986, Maradona weaved his magic to score twice as Argentina secured only their second-ever win against England and 12 years later they again accounted for England, this time
on penalties after a pulsating 2-2 draw.
Michael Owen introduced himself to the world stage with a stunning solo effort to put Glenn Hoddle's side 2-1 up after Alan Shearer had cancelled out Gabriel Batistuta's goal.
A magnificent rearguard action from the Three Lions nearly saw them hold out for an unlikely victory but in the resulting penalty shoot-out, Carlos Roa saved from Paul Ince and David Batty.
Three years ago a David Beckham penalty saw England beat Argentina in the World Cup for the first time since 1966.
