Darren Anderton takes on Sweden in the Umbro Cup match in June 1995.
Anderton's post strike
Friday, 01 July 2005.
Former England midfielder Darren Anderton was one of England's stars at Euro 96.
A year before those European Championships in England, Anderton was part of the rapidly-evolving Terry Venables side that hosted the Umbro Cup.
Anderton had made his debut in Venables' first match in charge of the national side and in this his eighth match, he registered his second goal for his country with a brilliant volley.
The match had started badly - Hakan Mild scoring twice to put the visitors 2-0 up but then Teddy Sheringham scored his first England goal to bring the Three Lions back into contention.
A minute into the second half Kennet Andersson restored the Swedes' two-goal advantage only for David Platt to finish from close range to give England a slight chance.
That set up Anderton, who latched on to Alan Shearer's knock-down and unleashed a right-footed drive that flew past Ravelli, struck both posts and landed in the back of the net.
