Steve Stone celebrates scoring for England against Portugal in 1995.
Stone's scorcher
Wednesday, 29 June 2005.
Former England midfielder Steve Stone, who won nine caps for his country, scoring two goals, has today signed for Leeds United.
At his peak, he was a rampagingly effective right-sided midfielder who caught the eye of Terry Venables in the build-up to Euro 96.
Having made his debut against Switzerland in a 3-1 win a month earlier, Stone scored his second England goal in as many matches as he put England ahead a minute before half-time against Portugal. He never went on to fulfil his England potential, being cut-down by a series of frustrating injuries.
However, he rediscovered form and consistency last season under Harry Redknapp and will now give the Leeds squad balance with pacey American Eddie Lewis set to feature on the opposite flank, subject to a work permit.
Stone made 73 starts for Portsmouth having joined from Aston Villa, but was released at the end of the campaign as new boss Alain Perrin looks to build his own side.
