On Saturday Brazil triumphed 3-2 over Germany in the FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final in Nuremburg. The match formed part of the host's preparations for next summer's World Cup.

Ten years ago, the south Americans were doing much the same over in London helping England get ready for their own special event.

England were a year away from welcoming the best in Europe to Euro '96 and Brazil were in town for the Umbro Cup, a mini warm-up competition for the forthcoming UEFA tournament.

England took the lead thanks to a fine goal from Graeme Le Saux. Stuart Pearce delivered a free-kick which was only half cleared from the near post as far as Le Saux hanging on the edge of the box.

The Blackburn full-back steadied himself with one touch before lofting goalwards, over the head of Brazilian 'keeper Zetti and into the net.

England held on to the lead for almost an hour before Juninho curled in a beautiful free-kick to level matters.

Terry Venables' unbeaten record as England coach was all but over when PSV Eindhoven teenage sensation Ronaldo scored his first international goal, and Edmundo snatched Brazil's third, inflicting England's first home defeat in four years.
