Richardson may only be amongst the substitute's for the opening fixture of the two game tour after being called in as a late replacement by Sven-Goran Eriksson.

But it still represents a massive step forward in such a short space of time for a player who just over four months ago was a Manchester United reserve.

Richardson joined the Baggies during the January transfer window and played a massive part in ensuring they pulled off the Great Escape in staying in the Premiership via a central midfield role.

And he is quick to cite the influence of former England captain Robson in having faith in him and then helping to develop his game even in such a short period.

But Richardson is also confident enough in his ability to believe he can fill the problem left-sided role for his country - he has played there for the Under-21 side - if Eriksson ever gave him the call.

Richardson, who trained with the squad in Chicago for the first time on Wednesday, told PA Sport: "I know that I've got this chance because a few people have dropped out - but for me it is a great honour to get called up by your country.

"It does show how well I played recently for West Brom - and if it wasn't for West Brom I wouldn't be in the position I am right now, training with England's best players in America.

"The move to West Brom gave me the chance to show people what I could do in the Premiership. By playing regular football, you get more time to do that. I've gained a confidence from that."

Richardson added: "Bryan Robson has been great for me. He took a massive gamble when he brought me to the club. I hadn't got a lot of experience of the Premiership and he did so well for me.

"It's fair to say that Bryan Robson bringing me to West Brom revived my career. If it wasn't for him, I'd probably still be in the reserves at Manchester United.

"If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be in this position now of being out in Chicago with England. He took a gamble on me and it paid off.

"He has always been giving me tips. He was a great player for England and Manchester United and has always been helping me with my game. I owe him a great deal for the past four or five months."

As regards making an impact with England, Richardson admitted: "I believe in my ability and believe I can play on the big stage. It would be a great honour to actually play for my country and, if it was on the left-wing, then fair enough.

"Obviously they've had problems on the left wing and I feel I can do that job and do it well. I've been playing left-wing for the Under-21s and done quite well. Peter Taylor has seen that in me and I do believe I can do that role as well.

"At West Brom I played in the centre of midfield and it went really well for me but I feel I can do both jobs equally as good. At Manchester United I also play on the left-wing."
