The Charlton right-back was a late call-up to the squad and finally got into the action as a 75th minute substitute for Andy Johnson at Soldier Field.

As he said: "It is difficult to get into the game when there are only 15 minutes to go, especially as a defender. You really need half a game or 60 minutes to get used to it at this level.

"But it was great and I’m delighted now that I have a cap. My mum was especially proud of me when I was called up, and I’ve had loads of messages from family and friends."

One of the things that has made it easier for many of the young players called into Sven-Goran Eriksson’s squad has been the fact that they have played together at youth and Under-21 level for England before.

"A lot of the lads know each other well because of that, and I think I have played with half the squad at Under-21 level. That has made it easier for all of us."

One player Young did not know personally before this trip was Kieran Richardson, but everyone knows about the Manchester United winger after his sparkling two-goal debut on Saturday.

As a right-back, Young is likely to be facing him again in the Premiership next season and he said: "I didn’t really know him before this, but he is clearly going to be a very exciting player for years to come.

"Next season might be a bit soon for him to establish a regular first-team place at United, but he is certainly going to be a terrific player."
