The two flew in from Madrid on Sunday evening and had only one training session with what is a very young squad, but Beckham was pleased with the way things went.

He said: "I think it was entertaining for the fans and we are very happy to have won.

"To score three goals and have Colombia coming back twice was good for the fans and the people who have paid money to come and watch.

"I think it was a good performance. We know we have people missing from the team and this is a makeshift line-up, but we showed some good quality out there."

And having come through the England ranks with Owen and now working with him every day in Madrid, Becks was delighted for his friend and colleague.

"This is great for Michael. He's a goalscorer and it's been a tough season for him. He hasn't played every game for Real Madrid, but for Michael each time he has come on he has scored a goal and proven what a great goalscorer he is. It doesn't get much better than today."

And with a new generation emerging from this trip, the skipper thinks the future is bright for England.

"I thought they played really well out here. Some of the young players have come here and done really well and I'm sure the manger has noticed that."

But now he is going to visit Los Angeles to promote his new football academy there, and will have a well-deserved break. "I'll go to LA where the Beckham Soccer Academy is and I'm looking forward to that - and to a holiday."
