Exclusive: Michael Owen interview

England's hat-trick hero Michael Owen spoke exclusively to TheFA.com after the game at the Giants Stadium.

Michael Owen admitted that he is aiming for Bobby Charlton's England goalscoring record after his hat-trick against Colombia took him to fourth in the all-time list.

Owen's treble moved him onto 32 goals in 70 appearances and lifted him above Alan Shearer, Tom Finney and Nat Lofthouse who all scored 30 times for the Three Lions.

The Real Madrid striker is now only behind Jimmy Greaves (44), Gary Lineker (48) and Bobby Charlton (49) in terms of England goals, but says he will try to take top spot from the former Manchester United legend.

Owen said: "The names above me in the list are not bad at all and with these three goals I have passed some great names as well.

"Every goal I score from now on people will say is one less on the way to the record, but there is still a long way to go.

"I'm into the 30s now which is nice, but Bobby Charlton has 49 which is a long way off. But you have got to aim high and that is what I am aiming for.

"If I fail to beat the record it won't be for the want of trying."

Although Owen struck three times, Colombia fought back with two goals of their own and the England striker believes the country can be pleased the team held on for the win.

"To play two games on this tour and win twice means it was an exercise well done," he added.

"Colombia look like they will be going to the World Cup so they are a decent opponent and we are well pleased with the win.

"There were a lot of youngsters in our team, but all the debutants have come in and made a winning start which is very promising."
