Sven-Goran Eriksson has handed the two players their first ever England call-up and they will join the squad in Manchester on Tuesday before flying to Chicago later that day.

After Birmingham City defender Matthew Upson withdrew from the squad with a hernia, Tottenham's Michael Dawson had been on stand-by but he too has an injury (calf) and cannot make the Tour.

Knight, 25, has played four times for the England U21s and has been a regular starter for Fulham all season.

Manchester United midfielder Richardson, who has been on-loan at West Bromwich Albion since January, joins up after Shaun Wright-Phillips withdrew with a knee injury.

The 20-year-old has got three England Under-21 caps so far this season and has been in very impressive form in keeping West Brom in the Premiership.

Explaining the call-ups, England Head Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson told TheFA.com: "I've seen Kieran play on a number of occasions this season and there is no doubt he's a tremendous young talent.

"He's taken his chance with West Bromwich Albion in the second half of the season and has played a significant role in keeping the club up. He's impressed me and I look forward to having him with us."

Sven continued: "I hope he can make the most of this opportunity with England just as he has done with West Brom.

"And Zat Knight is another player I have been aware of for some time. He has all the attributes to be a top defender so it will be interesting to see how he does with us on this tour.

"It’s an opportunity for him to show that he has the ability to play at the very highest level so it's a good chance for him."
