Sven has named Sol Campbell as England captain for the match against the USA in Chicago on Saturday.

It was a decision that the England boss found an easy one to make.

"Sol is a leader," he said, explaining his choice. "He is currently the most experienced player in the squad and has a very important role to play for the team. He knows that.

"This is a young, talented squad and Sol will be an excellent leader for them - I am sure of that. We have a challenging match on Saturday and all the players are looking forward to it."

Campbell has 64 caps to his name, having made his debut under Terry Venables in a friendly against Hungary at Wembley in May 1996.

This is not the first time he has captained his country, though, as he twice performed the honour of skippering his country under Glenn Hoddle.

The first occasion came just prior to the 1998 World Cup in France when he led the side against Belgium.  Then, six months later, he also captained England in Hoddle's last match as England coach, a 2-0 win against the Czech Republic.

It’s a role that he’s eager to fulfill once more.

"The manager told me when we met up in Manchester and I was very happy," explained the Arsenal defender.

"It’s a great honour. I really enjoyed it when I captained England previously. I consider myself to be a leader and I think the captaincy and extra responsibility brings the best out of me as a player.

"This is an important tour for us and obviously it’s a great start for me personally."
