England 2-0 USA
International Friendly
07 September 1994
Wembley Stadium

England's last match against the USA was a 2-0 win at Wembley in September 1994, in a match which saw them banish to some extent the memory of the previous season's debacle.

Sterner challenges lay ahead during the season's series of friendly fixtures but coach Terry Venables' four-match unbeaten run - without a goal against - was starting to put a smile back on England supporters' faces.

The American visitors, whose World Cup showing had been better than anticipated, gave the impression at Wembley that they were chiefly concerned with keeping the score to a respectable level.

Athletic but largely unadventurous, they managed a solitary shot on target and presented awkward opposition only when defending. Even that defence was breached twice inside eight minutes during the first half - Alan Shearer's double strike virtually rendered the second half academic.

Goals from Thomas Dooley and Alexi Lalas in Boston had brought England an unexpected, perhaps even humiliating, defeat fifteen months before. Now the American pair were standing defiant - for 32 minutes at least - to remind the home players of that fateful day.

Then Lalas opted to back off as Shearer brought the ball under control on the edge of the box and the Blackburn striker had time in which to drill a low right-footer to Brad Friedel's left.

Seven minutes later Graeme Le Saux, released by Teddy Sheringham, hit a rising cross in from the left and Shearer gave Lalas the slip again to head his fifth England goal in eleven internationals.
