The Tottenham star has been earning rave reviews for his club and has started the last five games for Sven-Goran Eriksson's side.

Robinson has been forced to wait patiently after David James appeared to make the position his own in the England team.

But following the World Cup qualifier away against Austria in the World Cup qualifiers, Eriksson made the bold decision to hand Robinson the number one jersey.

Robinson has not looked back keeping three clean sheets and helping England pick up vital wins over Poland, Wales and Azerbaijan in the World Cup qualifiers.

And he has already set his sights on reaching the finals in Germany next summer and being England's number one at the World Cup.

Robinson said: "I like to think I am now England's number one. I have been selected for the last five games and if I didn't play in the next qualifying games, I would be disappointed.

"I have been really pleased with my form and have kept three clean sheets for England. But hopefully that is just the start for me.

"I am only 25 and want to stay England's number one for a long time to come and keep a lot more clean sheets.

"We want to get the World Cup qualifiers out of the way and get the points in the bag as quickly as possible.

"No disrespect to Northern Ireland or Azerbaijan, but we are playing both games at home and it gives us a great chance to get six points. That would take us even closer to Germany.

"I would absolutely love to play in the World Cup. It has been a long hard qualifying campaign and there are still a few more games to come.

"We have been to the likes of Azerbaijan and have faced difficult matches in Poland and Austria. But hopefully we will get through it and end up in Germany next year."

Robinson is well aware England have been starved of any success since winning the World Cup back in 1966.

But he is determined to end that next summer and admits the England team are desperate win the World Cup in Germany.

Robinson added: "This country is proud of the football history it has got. We have lived on the memories of 1966 for a long time and it's time we give something back to the fans.

"I am a fan myself and would love to go down in the history as a player who wins something.

"A World Cup victory would be such a massive achievement and will always be remembered in this country."

Robinson was handed a big honour this week when he became the first England player to look around the new Wembley.

The Spurs keeper was taken aback by the scale of the new stadium and could not believe how much work had already taken place.

And he admits it has made him even more determined to play the first game for England at the new Wembley when it opens next year.

He added:"The new Wembley looks awesome and it is so big. I have seen it on television a few times, but until you actually see it, you don't appreciate the size of it.

"It is going to be great when we play here. Wembley is the home of English football and has been for years.

"It has been good touring around the grounds and playing in front of different crowds.

"But to see the new Wembley being built is fantastic and this is going to be our home for many years to come.

"I hope it intimidates other teams who are going to play here. When it is packed to the rafters with England fans, it is only going to help us."

David Beckham and Michael Owen have both seen the stadium under construction but Robinson was the first England international to get a behind-the-scenes tour.

"It is a really big honour to become the first England player to see the new Wembley and be shown around the ground.

"Hopefully I get to play a lot of games and I am really looking forward to playing here.

"Without a doubt I am going to be telling the other England players about the new stadium. If the boys ask me, I will tell them how awesome it looks."
