Frank's outstanding performances for Chelsea made it impossible for Sven to leave him out and, although starting on the left of midfield, his energy and strength still shone through. England's fluid approach down the left flank caused numerous problems for Portugal before Lampard was subbed off at half-time. |

There was plenty to impress in Lampard's performance, with John Terry and Ashley Cole also excellent in the Three Lions defence. Sven selected Lampard ahead of Nicky Butt for the base of the England diamond in midfield and at times the Chelsea man’s interplay with Beckham, Gerrard and Scholes was exemplary. England’s domination of possession allowed Lampard to rove forward to great effect and he was inevitably involved in the build-up to Michael Owen's predatory goal. |

Having missed a great opportunity after 19 minutes, heading wide from a David Beckham cross, Lampard scored his first England goal of 2004 to get this convincing win underway. Bursting forward from midfield, he collected a neat pass from Paul Scholes and let fly from 20 yards, with a deflection off the left leg of Herman Hreidarsson helping the ball on its way. It was then left to Wayne Rooney to ensure that England departed for Euro 2004 on a high. |

The Three Lions were committed from the off in this Euro 2004 opener, with Frank working hard to deny the French space in the middle of the park. With seven minutes to go in the half, Beckham whipped in a free-kick which Lampard met with a perfect near-post header that flashed past Barthez in an instant. Pure class. He, and the whole of England, were denied one of our greatest results ever though, as Barthez saved Beckham's second half penalty, and Zinedine Zidane sealed England fate with two stoppage time goals. So cruel, and still painful!

England got back on track against Switzerland with Wayne Rooney the star of the show. In sweltering conditions in Coimbra, high-tempo football was difficult, but Lampard and Gerrard managed to keep the Swiss quiet in the middle and Rooney did the rest. |

The pre-match euphoria went in an instant as England fell behind on five minutes, but they produced a rousing fight-back, attacking with the dynamism that brought back memories of Munich in 2001. Rooney was once again imperious with two goals and an assist, as was Frank Lampard who played with drive and desire, personifying the best attributes of the team. He added the coup de grace on 78 minutes, drifting past tired Croatian legs to fire home with a firm left-footed strike. |

With the game in extra time after Helder Postiga of all people had cancelled out Michael Owen's early strike, Rui Costa fired in from 18 yards out, seemingly ending England's Euro 2004. The Three Lions weren't finished yet though - Lampard sent the game to penalties with a drilled shot on the turn after Beckham's corner had been headed down to him by John Terry. He netted his penalty, but misses by Beckham and Vassell sent England home early - it was a terrible way to lose after setting the tournament alight in the group stage. |

Having been in the form of his life at Euro 2004 Frank Lampard, now a natural selection in the Three Lions midfield, continued to boss the middle of the park, this time with Nicky Butt. His forward runs helped to open up the Ukraine defence, but it was David Beckham who was the real star in this match - he scored one and provided the cross for Owen's goal. |

Frank, reunited with Steven Gerrard in central midfield for this World Cup Qualifier, was highly influential again, scoring his fifth goal in seven games for England. Everyone was expecting Beckham to let-fly from a free-kick in the box, but instead the ball was clipped to Lampard who was completely free a yard out and tucked it home. England went two up through a superb curling strike from Steven Gerrard, but were pegged back by two quick-fire goals from Austria. |

England answered the critics in Chorzow - their attitude was spot-on, chasing and harrying when without the ball and playing quick, short passes with it. Lampard was ever involved in England's fluid attacking moves, and could have scored early on after a sharp one-two with Jermain Defoe. It was the Tottenham man's day though as he opened his international account with a quick turn and clinical finish past Jerzy Dudek in the Poland goal. |

Frank continued his amazing scoring run within five minutes of the start and took the fire out of what was expected to be a game full of passion. A ball played in to Michael Owen’s feet inside the box was moved off to the Chelsea man who drove past Paul Jones with the aid of a deflection. Wales had the wind knocked out of their sails and it was fairly comfortable for England for the remainder of the match. David Beckham’s curler with 15 minutes to play sealed the victory. |

On a wet and windy night in Baku, England had to work hard for three vital World Cup qualification points, with Michael Owen's headed goal proving decisive. Frank Lampard worked hard in a three-man midfield, with his most notable contributions in an attacking capacity being a 30-yard thunderbolt which was palmed over by Hasanzade in the Azeri goal, and a goal disallowed in injury time due to a Joe Cole foul. Not vintage England, but the result was all important. |

A vibrant, fluid attacking force, Spain were irresistible in Madrid, with England struggling to contain them. Nonetheless, Frank had again been an automatic choice in the starting XI, in a year in which his performances turned him from a fringe player to a regular in the heart of the Lions midfield. Congratulations to him on his Player of the Year accolade and may 2005 be another fantastic year for Frank Lampard in an England shirt. Bring on March's qualifiers!! |
Frank will be presented with the award by our competition winner, Mick Longstaff from Whitburn in Sunderland. He'll travel down to Villa Park with a friend to watch England take on Holland on Wednesday 9 February and hand Frank the newly-designed trophy shortly before the game kicks off.
