Frank Lampard grapples with Titus Bramble during Chelsea's 4-0 victory over Newcastle.
Frank gets the nod
By Joe Bernstein. Monday, 06 December 2004.
Every Monday TheFA.com announces the best England player from the weekend. This week Chelsea's Frank Lampard gets the nod, remarkably for the first time this season, from England's 1990 World Cup semi-finalist Paul Parker...
Same result for Chelsea, different Lion grabbing the headlines. Whereas John Terry was the two-goal hero in a 4-0 win at Charlton the previous weekend, this time it was Frank Lampard who made the difference against Newcastle on Saturday.
Lampard broke Newcastle’s resistance with a typical burst into the penalty area to crash home Didier Drogba’s knockdown. And the England man showed he can create goals as well by then playing a superb 50-yard pass into Drogba’s path for the second goal.
Although Paul Parker won trophies at Manchester United, he couldn’t fail to be impressed by the Chelsea midfielder.
"Frank is very consistent. He and Shaun Wright-Phillips have been the most consistent England midfield players," says Paul.
"The first goal on Saturday was something we’ve seen so often. Frank strikes the ball more cleanly than any other player I can think of.
"Jose Mourinho has been clever in sticking largely to the same side every week and Frank has become one of the main focal points. It is hard to believe some people were calling him an £11.5million misfit earlier in his Chelsea career.
"I think he is now the first midfielder on the England team-sheet, closely followed by Steve Gerrard who is fit again and looking good."
