Darren's delight
By James Wright. Monday, 15 August 2005.
Darren Bent had about as perfect day as it is possible to have on Saturday - scoring twice for new club Charlton and then getting the phone call that all English footballers dream about.
After he scored his first goals for the Addicks away at Sunderland, Bent found out that he had been included by Sven-Goran Eriksson in his squad to
play Denmark in a friendly on Wednesday evening.
"It was an amazing day - making my Premiership debut for a new club, scoring my first brace in the Premiership and then to get the England call-up on the back of that was just a dream come true - amazing," the Charlton striker told TheFA.com.
Indeed, the chance to go to Copenhagen with Sven's squad came as such a surprise to the engaging 21-year old that initially he didn't believe it was true.
"I got off the Charlton team plane back from Sunderland and my battery was completely dead," Bent explained. "So I got home and put it on the charger for a bit and got it going and I found I had a message from Michelle [Farrer, England Team Administrator].
"She said 'Hi Darren, you've been called up to the Senior squad' and at first I thought it was a wind-up, that someone was just having laugh so
I didn't pay too much notice to it!
"But then she texted me with all the details of the Seniors and where they are meeting so then I called Lindsey [Jackson, England U21s Team Administrator] and she said it was all true and that it was good news - I was in the Seniors squad.
"I was so stunned. I was completely gobsmacked. I told my parents what had happened and they couldn't quite believe it."
With eight goals in 12 matches, Bent has an impressive goalscoring record for the U21s but despite other players having recently made the jump from that side to the Senior team, the call-up was still a huge surprise.
"You never in your wildest dreams think that you are going to play your first Premiership game and then get an England call-up all on the same day,"
Bent said. "I couldn't believe it and it still hasn't sunk in.
"Playing for the Senior team never crossed my mind once. I was preparing myself for the U21 game on Tuesday and didn't think anything of being with the national team so to get the call was a massive shock."
Now Bent has the chance to show the England Head Coach just what he is made of and he is determined to do his best and enjoy the experience.
"I'm just going to do my best and get out of it as much as I can. When you talk about playing for England you are talking about playing with some of the best players in the world.
"You know - you've got David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Rio Ferdinand.... I'm just going to go in there and do as well as I can and try an impress."
