After a slow start to the season, there is no stopping Michael Owen.

His poacher’s finish in a 2-0 win for Real Madrid against Getafe in La Liga on Sunday was his fourth goal in a row for his club. And that followed his winner for England in Azerbaijan.

His now joint-leader of our Lion of the Season table, sharing two weekly nominations alongside Shaun Wright-Phillips and Under-21 winger Stewart Downing.

Former England international Russell Osman says of Owen: "He is proven on the big stage. He has done it since he was 18 and that is why Real Madrid and England will always keep faith with Michael Owen.

"He knows where the goal is and won’t let a lean spell stop him from getting in those scoring positions."

Owen reacted quickly to pounce on a pass from Ronaldo after half-an-hour in the Bernabeu. One quick glance and he dispatched the all into the bottom right-hand corner.

When he was taken off after 73 minutes, the Madrid fans rose to him. And he will aim to continue the scoring sequence in the Champions League at Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday.
