Terry stood firm at the back as Charlton dominated the early stages at The Valley and then scored twice from setpieces to help Chelsea win 4-0 and move five points clear at the top of the Premiership.

It was a display that impressed England's 1982 World Cup captain Mick Mills, who made him Lion of the Weekend.

"Ray Wilkins tipped me off a few years ago about John Terry when he was reserve-team manager at Chelsea.

"I was at Birmingham then and we thought about taking him on loan. After watching John play, I wasn’t convinced he would be a top player butRay was absolutely adamant - and he was right!

"John is now everything a centre-half should be, as he proved at Charlton. He is a Terry Butcher ‘over my dead body’ type and he is always likely to score the odd goal as well.

"A lot of centre-halves are pushed up for corners because they are big, but it’s purely cosmetic because they never attack the ball. John isn’t like that - he is a genuine threat and wherever the ball is, he is attacking it.

I also like the fact that in defence he is always the player looking to block the shot."

Terry scored Chelsea’s second and third goals at The Valley. His first was a header direct from a Damien Duff and his second was bundled over the line after Duff’s corner had been headed back across goal by Ricardo Carvalho.
