Spurs star Robinson knows he faces a battle from in-form David James if he wants to hold onto his place as England’s number one. So a 0-0 draw at Villa Park was just fine.

He said: "Goalkeepers pride themselves on clean sheets, so I’m pleased with it. We had a lot of injuries in defence but the players who came in did really well. There was a lot for us to cope with during the week as players pulled out, but the two lads who came in at the back did such a good job.

"We have got a lot of strength in depth and I think we proved that this time."

Robinson has been outstanding for England ever since he took James’ place for the World Cup qualifier in Poland.. And despite his rival’s outstanding form for Manchester City, he is determined to keep the job.

"You’re always on trial with England, that will always be the same. But I have confidence in myself, I always believe I can do the job.

"You can’t worry about making mistakes and what could happen if you did. You just have to keep your concentration.

"I didn’t have much to do this time but it was still a good game for me. I was selected to play and you can only deal with what you are given. I kept a clean sheet, so I’m pleased."
