Stewart Downing and Andy Johnson both made their senior international debuts as second-half substitutes in last night's goalless draw with Holland, and were delighted to get their first taste of international football.
Having enjoyed fantastic seasons domestically - Downing continuing his meteoric rise at the Riverside and Johnson climbing to second in the Premiership top scorer lists with struggling Crystal Palace - both were proud to take another step in their careers.
"It was a great honour to be out there playing international football," said Johnson. "I’m very thankful to Mr Eriksson for putting me out on the pitch.
"There were world class players out there - millions and millions of pounds worth of players - so it’s an absolute pleasure to play amongst them.
"I think it’s always nerve-racking stepping up to the next level, but once you get out on the pitch your fears go, yours nerves go, and you just get on with the game."
Stewart Downing, who may provide a long-term solution to England's left sided problem, also enjoyed making the step up from Under-21s to full international honours.
"I don’t think it was the best of games, but it was my first game and I loved every minute of it," he said.
"[Sven and Steve McClaren] just said good luck, and do what you’ve been doing for your club really - that’s what got me here so I shouldn’t change my game.
"Becks said straight away as soon as I got on ‘get at them do what you do best’ - it was great encouragement from him."
And how did Stewart enjoy linking up with left-back Ashley Cole down the left flank?
"Obviously Ashley’s a good player, and overlaps as well which gives you a bit of a breather. I thought we did ok together."
Both of the new boys seem to have caught the international football bug, and are now looking to build on their achievements.
"I’m not here for the ride," said Johnson. "It would be a great pleasure if I could get another call-up."
"Hopefully there’s many more to come," confirmed Downing. "I'll just try and keep playing well for Middlesbrough and that’s all I can do really."
