England v Holland
Villa Park, Birmingham
09 February 2005, 7.45pm
Tickets for the match on Wednesday 9 February at the 42,000-capacity Villa Park stadium went on sale at 10am on Sunday, and had all been snapped up by lunchtime on Tuesday.
The prospect of meeting one of Europe's finest footballing nations has evidently caught the imagination of the Birmingham public, who will look forward to seeing the likes of Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, and flying Chelsea winger Arjen Robben take on England's finest.
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson was naturally delighted with the news, as he exclusively told TheFA.com:
"I am not surprised that our fans have been very quick to buy their tickets for this game. They always offer us tremendous support in any match we play, either home or away, and of course for this one too - it really is a very exciting prospect. Holland have so many skilful players and I am very much looking forward to seeing how our own team rises to this challenge.
"We will see players like Terry and Lampard, who are both doing excellently at the moment, come up against Robben. He is on fire and we will have to watch him for every minute. Then you have Rio Ferdinand and the possibility of him playing against Ruud van Nistelrooy. That should be another little battle to watch. I think the players are themselves looking forward to this one."
This will be England's third fixture at Villa Park since the rebuilding of Wembley began, one of which was Sven’s first game in charge - a 3-0 victory against Spain in February 2001.
"Obviously Villa Park will always be a little bit special for me, because it was the venue for my first England game back in 2001, and it will be wonderful to have our fantastic fans behind us once again. It will be almost exactly three years since that first game. I must say this has been a beautiful time in my career to manage England and I hope that we have even more special times ahead of us
"The World Cup qualifying matches come around soon. They are the priority and we could not ask for any better preparation."
