Real Madrid's new stadium, originally named La Castellana, but renamed in January 1955 after the president, was opened on 14 December 1947, when Real Madrid played against the Portuguese side Os Belenenses, winning the game 3-1.

In 1953, due to enormous demand from the fans, the stadium was extended with a third amphitheatre (known as the "gallinero", or "henhouse"), which gave the stadium a steep-sided look of a birthday cake..

During the 1950s and 60s, when Real won six European Cups in eleven years, the Bernabéu enjoyed baying crowds of up to 120,000, though most of them were standing in terracing.

Spain have twice hosted major international championships and both times the Bernabéu hosted the final.

Indeed, Spain won its only championship to date all of 40 years ago when they beat the USSR in the final of the European Nations Cup.

In the early 1980s, the stadium saw its first major refurbishment to bring it up to the standard necessary to become a World Cup venue.

The façade and access to the ground was modernised, and a partial roof was added, which though bringing the stadium up to date, reduced the capacity to around 90,000.

Four imaginative and dominating access towers were added during further work carried out in 1992 which took the capacity up to 106,500.

However, in the last decade, the Bernabéu had to conform to UEFA laws as well as Spanish legislation so, from the 1998/99 season, the stadium has had an all-seater capacity of just 75,000, though the ground feels much larger than that.

England last played in the ground when Gary Lineker scored four times in a 4-2 win over the Spanish in the 16th meeting between the two sides.
