Having opened their Euro 80 campaign with a draw against Belgium and a defeat at the hands of hosts Italy, England made some changes ahead of their final group game.

Needing a win to have any chance of qualifying, Ron Greenwood's side came out in a positive mood. Although they had the best of the early exchanges, it was Spain who had the best chance early on, Zamora heading Saura's cross just wide.

England responded well and soon Terry McDermott played a long ball forward which was fumbled by Luis Arconada and Kevin Keegan went close to putting England ahead.

On 18 minutes England edged ahead. A foul by Gomez on Keegan gave England a free-kick in a promising area, one of many awarded against the Real Madrid player.

McDermott sent over a long centre to the far post where Ray Wilkins did extremely well to head across goal for Trevor Brooking to slide in and put the Lions ahead.

After that, England could have had further goals but the best chances again fell to Spain who were guilty of some poor finishing in front of goal. Santillana shot over when well placed and Zamora saw his poor effort well saved by Ray Clemence.

Soon after half-time Spain were awarded a penalty when Zamora and Santillana combined well, sending Zamora through. Clemence came out to claim the ball off the Real Sociedad player, who went down heavily.

Though the decision looked dubious, Dani stepped up to take the penalty and rubbed salt in to England's wounds by checking his stride as he ran up to the ball.

Six minutes later Spain had another penalty when Dave Watson was judged to have fouled Saura.

Dani again prepared to take the spot-kick and again he stopped in his run up to the ball. But this time the referee ordered it to be retaken.

Dani placed the ball back on the spot and then hit the penalty the opposite way to his first effort and Clemence dived low to his right to save.

England won the match on the hour with a goal from Tony Woodcock. A Viv Anderson cross was tipped over for a corner which was taken by Brooking.

He picked out McDermott on the edge of the area and the Liverpool man volleyed brilliantly at goal. Arconada pulled off a marvellous save only to see his parry pounced on by Cologne striker Woodcock, who made no mistake.
