Scholes decided to leave the international scene after playing in two World Cups and two European Championships.

Sven, under whom Scholes won 36 of his 66 England caps, told TheFA.com: "I am very sorry that Paul has decided to retire from international football.

"
Paul and I have been speaking about this since Euro 2004 and, while he remained a key part of my plans for the England Team, I fully respect his decision."

Scholes scored 14 times in his seven years playing for the Three Lions, the last of which came at Euro 2004 against Croatia.

Sven continued: "
Paul is a great
player who has given so much to England over the last seven years. He has a very special talent and it has been a privilege working so closely with him.

"
I would like to wish Paul every success in the future with Manchester United. He deserves it."
