Following the retirement of Paul Scholes, England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson spoke to TheFA.com about the Manchester United midfielder.
Scholes decided to leave the international scene after playing in two World Cups and two European Championships.
Sven, under whom Scholes won 36 of his 66 England caps, told TheFA.com: "I am very sorry that Paul has decided to retire from international football.
"Paul and I have been speaking about this since Euro 2004 and, while he remained a key part of my plans for the England Team, I fully respect his decision."
Scholes scored 14 times in his seven years playing for the Three Lions, the last of which came at Euro 2004 against Croatia.
Sven continued: "Paul is a great player who has given so much to England over the last seven years. He has a very special talent and it has been a privilege working so closely with him.
"I would like to wish Paul every success in the future with Manchester United. He deserves it."
