McClaren worked alongside Sven-Goran Eriksson during Euro 2004 and previously in the build up to and during the World Cup in Japan two years ago.

Head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said: "I’m delighted to confirm Steve’s role with the England team. I rate him as one of the best coaches in the world and have tremendous respect for his ability.

"We really enjoy working together and I’m sure we can continue developing the team during the qualification for World Cup Finals in Germany 2006. We are both determined to achieve success with England.

"I know Steve believes he can combine his role with Middlesbrough, where he is doing a very good job, while working with the England team.

"I would also like thank Middlesbrough Football Club, particularly Steve Gibson, for their continued support of the national team through releasing Steve for international matches.

Middlesbrough boss McClaren added: "Working with the England team is a tremendous honour, so I am delighted to be continuing in my role as coach.

"I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working at two major finals and I’m really looking forward to the game against Ukraine next week and the start of another qualification campaign next month in Austria.

"I’d like to thank Steve Gibson and Keith Lamb for their continued support of my work with England."

Eriksson also took time to pay tribute to Brian Kidd and Dave Sexton when confirming that they will not be part of the England coaching staff for the new season.

The England boss said: "I’ve spoken with Brian and Dave regarding the coaching set-up for the new campaign.

"Brian is a tremendous coach, who played a pivotal role in our qualification for Portugal. It was only illness that prevented him working with us during Euro 2004, which he is thankfully making a full recovery from.

"Dave Sexton is one of the greatest coaches England has ever produced, working with top clubs and with the national team over the years.

"His experience and wisdom has been very important to all of the coaching staff and players throughout my time with England.

"Dave and Brian will continue their involvement with the England set-up in a scouting capacity."
