The refurbished Ernst Happel Stadium, formerly known as The Prater Stadium, has a maximum five-star rating from UEFA.

The Prater, a vast open space that is to Vienna what Hyde Park is to London, was selected as the location for the stadium in 1929, by a socialist-controlled administration that saw its construction as a central feature of their ideological programme.

Architect Professor Ernst Schweizer designed the stadium using the Roman amphitheatre as his model, and when opened in 1931 it held 60,000 spectators, and provided a fitting arena for the legendary Austrian 'Wunderteam'.

A third tier increased the capacity to 91,150 as spectator sport boomed in the 1950s, although the addition of seating has decreased the capacity since. An impressive roof was added in the late 1980s lending an intimacy improbable in a stadium of such scale.

Throughout its history the arena has played host to a number of major finals, including that of the European Cup in 1964, 1970, 1987 and 1990, and the Champions League final of 1995.
