The Swede admits he has been greatly impressed with Smith's performances for new club Manchester United.

Smith joined from Leeds in a £7m deal in the summer and has already scored five goals in seven appearances.

And Eriksson insists the 23-year-old has a great chance to win his ninth England cap in Vienna.

He said: "He has been playing very well this season for Manchester United. I think he is playing better this year than last.

"It is normally easier to play well when you have so many good players around you like he has.

"It is especially the case for a centre forward because you get better assists, but he is doing very well.

"People talk about his aggressive nature, but I am not worried. I think to be aggressive in football is good.

"He may have done some stupid things in the past, but experience is something you have to learn from yourself.

"I've made up my mind who will play out of Smith and Jermain Defoe, but there are still a few training sessions left.

"They are two different strikers. Smith is a target player, strong and a scorer, while Defoe is quick, has great technique and can score goals as well."

Eriksson also revealed he could be about to pair Wayne Bridge with Ashley Cole on England's flank following Nicky Butt's problems with a hamstring injury.

He added: "It's one option we have especially if Butt can't play. We have to find someone to play in central midfield and that would probably lead to Steven Gerrard playing with Frank Lampard.

"Bridge is one option to play on the left, but there is also Kieron Dyer and Joe Cole. We are well covered and we will be practising our game plan over the next few days."
