England captain David Beckham has backed Michael Owen to overcome his tough start at Real Madrid.

Some questions have been raised over whether Owen will be ready to face Wales in England's World Cup qualifier at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The former Liverpool striker has a niggling injury and is yet to score for his new side - but Beckham insists Owen will be ready to face Mark Hughes' side if he is given the nod.

Beckham said: "Michael's goalscoring record speaks for itself at international and club level. It's been frustrating for him at Real because it is so tough to get in the team.

"He is up against quality players like Raul, Ronaldo and Morientes which is a nice problem for the manager to have - but frustrating for Michael himself.

"But Michael's game is all about confidence and I believe that once he gets the chance and gets his first goal there will be no problem."

Saturday's clash is expected to be a tough encounter as so many Premiership stars come face-to-face for their countries.

And Beckham believes the intense atmosphere will ensure a showcase occasion.

Beckham said: "There are so many connections in this game with Mark Hughes coming to Old Trafford, Giggs playing at home and also the fact he'll be up against Gary Neville.

"But I'm sure it will be as intense as ever and will probably be just like a Premiership match."
