The most famous meeting between the two countries came 31 years ago when an inspired display from goalkeeper Jan Tomaszweski kept out an England side needing to win to qualify for the 1974 World Cup.

Since then though, England have tended to do well against Poland and have often qualified for major tournaments at the expense of the Poles.

In 1991, a late Gary Lineker goal saw the Three Lions squeeze in to Euro 92, five years after a match in the 1986 World Cup Finals in which Lineker - the scourge of Poland - scored a memorable hat-trick.
