Exclusive Luke Young interview

Luke Young talks exclusively to TheFA.com ahead of the final World Cup qualifier against Poland.

Luke Young has promised to push Gary Neville all the way in a bid to earn himself a starting place in the England World Cup squad.

Charlton defender Young has taken over from injured Neville as England's right back in recent matches but accepts that he has a fight on his hands if he is to earn himself a regular place in the England team.

"Gary Neville is a great player and he is England's number two but if I'm in the squad I want to do the best I can and put some pressure on him," said Young.

He added that he can hardly believe he is playing for England despite always believing he had the ability.

"I always thought I had the potential to get in. I'm really enjoying it at the moment. I've got my chance to play on the summer tour and in some of the qualifiers.

"It seems amazing because I've only been involved for a short space of time; it's a bit daunting. I hope to get in the next squad and take it from there.

"Your club form gets you into the squad so every time you go out there I want to catch the eye of the manager and do my best."

Young has come a long way since the last World Cup in 2002, when he was not involved for England but he has taken advice from one of his Charlton colleagues since breaking through.

He recalled: "I was watching at home with my mates as a fan and hoping one day I would get my chance.

"Chris Powell has given me some advice having been in the squad and I asked him what the training and the people and the set-up was like.

"He said it's a different experience. At club level you play with everyone all the time, while you only get a few days to train with internationals.

"The more you get involved, the more settled you feel. Sometimes it's a bit strange to think about it but I've just been taking it as it comes and get on with it.

"Having a few games under my belt means the confidence starts to show. I've always enjoyed the training and I have a bit more banter with the lads, having been a bit quiet when I first came into the squad."

Young is expected to work the right with Shaun Wright-Phillips predicted to start against Poland following David Beckham's suspension, and he knows it will be a different type of partnership.

"It's going to be totally different to playing with David Beckham. If you give the ball to Shaun he will get on with it and try and attack the full-back while David tries to get behind players and whip in a cross."
