The Poland stopper, who injured his elbow while with Liverpool in August, has yet to make an appearance for his club this season, having last played in the Champions League victory over AC Milan in Istanbul in May.

"In my opinion it will be Artur Boruc who starts at Old Trafford," said Dudek. "Liverpool didn't want to release me after such a serious injury.

"I promised that I would be reasonable. But if (Polish trainer Pawel) Janas says. 'Jerzy, you're number one and you have to play' then I won't refuse."

Poland lead Group 6 with 24 points and will take first place automatically if England fail to win their game in hand against Austria on Saturday.

If England beat Austria, the Poles will need a draw but may also go to Old Trafford with a place at the finals guaranteed as one of the best-placed group runners-up.

Polish media reported that Celtic striker Maciej Zurawski could also be doubtful for the tie with a thigh strain. Zurawski scored the winner in Poland's last group game against Wales.
