Wales beat England in the last British Championship fixture between the two sides with a first-half goal from the then Manchester United 20-year old striker Mark Hughes, making his international debut in his home town.

Bobby Robson's original squad was decimated by withdrawals through injury in the days leading up to the match and at least half of the team which took the field could hardly have been called England regulars.

One of the two new caps, Southampton's Mark Wright, made a nervous start - looking to find Shilton with his first two touches from totally inappropriate positions - but performed with some confidence after that.

He was certainly not at fault when Hughes powered his header past Shilton from Alan Davies' free-kick on the right in the 17th minute.

Alvin Martin came closest to levelling for England when he managed to get in a header despite almost being sandwiched by two Welsh defenders about eight yards from goal.

Southall stretched upwards, both his punching fist and the ball apparently coming into contact with the crossbar, and only a desperate instinctive clearance by Mickey Thomas saved the day for the hosts.

Had he hesitated for a split second, John Gregory would surely have bundled the ball in.

Apart from Martin's effort, England looked unlikely on any other occasion to find the net. Wales on the other hand contrived to miss three decent scoring chances in the second half.

Shilton produced a superb reflex save to deny Rush, and Gordon Davies wasted the other two, shooting over and across Shilton's goal respectively.
