WALES

Mark Hughes playing for Wales against Italy in June 1999.
On familiar ground
By Dean Jones. Thursday, 07 October 2004.
Wales manager Mark Hughes will be stepping into familiar territory when he leads his country out at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Hughes is a Manchester United legend and enjoyed a fantastic career with the club, where he scored a total of 160 goals.
The striker enjoyed two spells with United between 1980-1986 and 1988-1995. In between he had spells with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
At Old Trafford Hughes was extremely successful and collected League Cup, FA Cup, European Cup Winners Cup and Premiership winners trophies.
In his final season Hughes helped Sir Alex Ferguson's men to the domestic double - before moving to west London to join Chelsea.
In three years at the club he picked up managed another FA Cup and picked up a second European Cup Winners Cup medal after success over Stuttgart.
Hughes's next port of call was Southampton, but by this time he already had an eye for management and in 1999 took temporary charge for Wales following Bobby Gould's departure.
He soon earned himself a four-and-a-half year deal as boss and hung up his playing boots at the age of 38 - after brief spells at Everton and Blackburn.
Hughes has done a great job as Wales manager and narrowly missed out on qualification for Euro 2004 after defeat in the play-off's against Russia.
His achievements led to the reward of an OBE earlier this year - and last month became the new manager of Blackburn.
Hughes has agreed to stay on as national coach for their qualification games against England and Poland - but will then leave the post to concentrate on his career in club management.
And Hughes will look at the match against England to provide one more surprise to delight Welsh supporters.
