Michael Owen celebrates his goal in England's one and only match against South Korea in 2002.
By Joe Bernstein. Wednesday, 13 October 2004.
Azerbaijan will become England’s 73rd opponents on Wednesday, joining a list that includes one-match wonders Canada, Ecuador and South Korea.
England come up against a first-time opponent this afternoon for the first time since they faced South Korea in Jeju in 2002.
Some sides, such as Scotland, have been regular opponents but at the other end of the scale, England's rich history has seen them play seven other countries just once in 132 years of international football.
Bohemia, 13 June 1908, Prague
Two goals from George Hilsden and further ones from Jimmy Windridge and Jock Rutherford gave England victory over a country that didn't actually exist at the time the match was played. In 1908, Bohemia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire but it did have an FA and the match stands as a full international.
Canada, 24 May 1986, Vancouver
Better-known for ice hockey than football, Canada hosted England just before both countries went to the 1986 World Cup finals. Mark Hateley scored the only goal of the game which was held in Burnaby, on the west coast just outside Vancouver. Canada’s manager was former Plymouth boss Tony Waiters.
China, 23 May 1996, Beijing
Terry Venables took England to Beijing ahead of Euro 96 and was rewarded with a comfortable 3-0 victory. Nick Barmby scored twice and Paul Gascoigne added another in a game that marked Ugo Ehiogu’s England debut. Having beaten Hungary in their previous game, it was the first time Venables had achieved back-to-back wins as England manager.
Ecuador, 24 May 1970, Quito
England travelled to Quito in 1970 as part of their high-altitude preparation for the Mexico World Cup. Francis Lee and Brian Kidd scored in each half in England’s final game before the World Cup itself. Skipper Bobby Moore was arrested in Colombia as the team made its way to Mexico from Ecuador. Moore was accused of stealing a bracelet but the charges were later found to have no credible foundation.
Kuwait, 25 June 1982, Bilbao
England had already qualified for the second round of the 1982 World Cup when they met Kuwait in their final group game. Paul Mariner set up Trevor Francis for the only goal of the game in Bilbao to ensure England topped the group and went into the second stage round-robin with hosts Spain and West Germany.
Malaysia, 12 June 1991, Kuala Lumpur
The end of Graham Taylor’s first year in charge of England was fondly remembered by Gary Lineker, who grabbed all the goals as England won 4-2 in Kuala Lumpur. It was Lineker’s fifth hat-trick of his international career and also his last. A year later, in 1992, he retired from international football.
South Korea, 21 May 2002, Seogwipo
England were criticised with only drawing 1-1 with the Koreans before the 2002 World Cup, with Michael Owen scoring the goal for Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side in Jeju. But the result looked better after the tournament, when Korea, managed by Gus Hiddink, reached the semi-finals.
* England have also played one-off matches against a FIFA XI, a Rest of the World XI, and a Rest of Europe XI.
