Lampard continued the impressive form he showed at Euro 2004 and bossed the midfield as well as finding the target.

The former West Ham midfielder has had to work very hard over the last year to become a regular in the first team because of the number of talented players in the country.

But Lampard has taken his impressive performances for Chelsea onto the international scene and Terry insists he is worthy of great respect.

Terry said: "Frank has been fantastic. He is the backbone of Chelsea. He has got his England chance because of how well he has played for Chelsea and he deserves it.

"For a midfielder to score five goals in seven games for his country is fantastic and every game he gets two or three chances and is always likely to put them away.

"He has been superb for club and country, but he has worked hard. He is desperate to play for his country. Frank is very proud and determined and he has reaped the rewards."
