Wayne Rooney was delighted with England’s 4-0 win over Northern Ireland, despite failing to grab a goal himself.

He said: "It was a good victory for us. They made it difficult for us at times, but we got the right result in the end.

"I wanted to try and make sure I got on the score-sheet, but it doesn’t really matter who scores."

Rooney went close with a first-half header which hit the woodwork. "I thought it might have crept in, but unfortunately it didn’t," he said.

The Manchester United star praised Joe Cole’s contribution following the Chelsea midfielder’s first competitive start for England.

"Joe Cole did really well out on the left and got a good goal as well," said Rooney.
