England take on the Ukraine at St James’ Park on Wednesday 18 August at 7.45pm, with the opposition boasting one of the most prolific marksmen in Europe, Andriy Shevchenko of AC Milan, in their ranks.

Fans in the North East will get to see The Three Lions at the home of Newcastle United for the first time since their 2-0 victory over Albania in 2001,which secured three vital World Cup-qualification points in front of a capacity crowd.

This time, England will be gearing up for their next World Cup campaign, which starts in September, and hometown favourites like Kieron Dyer, Jonathan Woodgate and Jermaine Jenas could play a part.

England Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is expecting a warm welcome from the Toon Army: "We’re looking forward to playing again in such a magnificent stadium, with such passionate fans.

"It will be vital preparation, only a short time before our two away games, against Austria and Poland in September."

Newcastle United Manager Sir Bobby Robson saw The Three Lions at close quarters during the Summer and sees this game as important for the fans as the players.

“The game against the Ukraine gives England fans their first opportunity to get behind the players since Euro 2004," he said.

“I am sure that the fantastic supporters from across the region will be out in force on the 18th August at St James’ Park, getting behind England as they begin their preparations for the 2006 World Cup.”
