Rio Ferdinand is looking forward to playing on familiar territory in next week’s World Cup Group Six qualifier against Northern Ireland.
The Manchester United defender is set to turn out in front of his home fans when England face the side managed by Lawrie Sanchez at Old Trafford.
"It’ll be a great game against Northern Ireland and it’s fantastic that it’ll be played at Old Trafford as well," Ferdinand told TheFA.com. "My first game back for England was at Old Trafford and hopefully it’ll go the same way as
that did."
Ferdinand made his international comeback following an eight-month ban in last October’s 2-0 victory over Wales.
England top the group with ten points from their opening four games and Ferdinand believes they will be strong contenders to win the World Cup if they go on to qualify for next year’s finals in Germany.
"I think with all the players the manager has to pick from, on paper, we’re probably as good as the best teams in the world," said Ferdinand. "It’s all about getting those players to play well as a unit. If we can get that right in the World Cup, we’ve got a great chance."
Ferdinand, who was won 36 caps since making his England debut in 1997,
admits he is thrilled at the prospect of appearing in the World Cup finals.
He said: "Playing in the World Cup is what you dream about as a kid. I watched World Cups and European Championships as a kid and always dreamed about playing in those tournaments and being recognised as one of the best players in the country."
Ferdinand’s long-term ambition is to skipper his country, but acknowledges he is likely to have to wait patiently for his chance.
"I’d love to be captain of England one day, that would be great for me," said the 26-year-old. "But it’s up to the manager and ‘Becks’ is going to be around for a long time yet."
