Sven’s decision to bring in Defoe proved to be an inspired one as the young Tottenham striker capped a fine full England debut with a wonderfully taken goal in the first half.

Having killed the ball in the penalty area Defoe spun and left his marker for dead, before emphatically striking past Poland 'keeper Jerzy Dudek.

It was a memorable goal, and Defoe's first at senior international level - there will doubtless be many more to come.

Aside from the goal, which put England well on the way to victory, Defoe looked sharp throughout, and was a constant thorn in the side of the Polish back-line.

Following the match, England Head Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson was naturally full of praise:

"He is a huge talent," he said, "quick and a great scorer and I am very happy for him."

Sven will now be faced with a selection headache of the best possible kind ahead of next month's qualification double-header against Wales and Azerbaijan.
