St. James’ Park is the venerable old man of the North East, having outlived both Sunderland’s Roker Park and Middlesbrough’s Ayresome Park.

In the early days the notoriously sloping pitch (the north goal being fully 18 feet above the south) played host to Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle West End, and finally Newcastle East end - the latter changing their name to Newcastle United after moving to the ground in 1892.

Only with Newcastle United’s participation in the Football League and subsequent promotion to the First Division did development to the ground occur in earnest. By 1905 St. James’ Park held upwards of 60,000 people and was considered the finest stadium in England.

Development disputes left the ground largely unchanged until the early 1970s, and allowed only limited improvement thereafter, but all that changed with the arrival of Sir John Hall in the early ‘90s. With his background in property development Sir John was able to transform St. James’ Park into the world class arena of today.
