Jamie Carragher is backing England team-mate John Terry to become PFA player of the year for the second season in a row.

Carragher hopes to line up alongside Terry for the Three Lions against Austria this weekend and is mighty glad the Chelsea man is on his side.

The duo have been doing battle against each other in the Premiership and Champions League recently, and Carragher can't help but admire his rival.

He said: "He was outstanding against us on Sunday at Anfield. It seemed like he had a magnet between his ears! Every time the ball went in he was there, he was heading everything away, cleaning everything away.

"Last season I voted for him as player of the year and the way he has started this year it looks as if I'll probably be voting for him again.

"He's a real defender, a proper defender. The most important thing if you are a defender is to keep a clean sheet and defend right and put yourself on the line for your club or country and I think he does that as well as anyone."

With Terry in such great form and Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell also fit, Carragher knows he faces a real battle to force his way into the England side at centre-back on Saturday.

But there are also positions at right-back and left-back up for grabs and he insists he isn't frustrated by playing second fiddle to England's other centre-backs.

He said: "They are fantastic players. Rio and John Terry are actually younger than me, Sol is bit older, but these are players that I look up to.

"Terry is outstanding. In the Euro squad 18 months ago I just sat there watching him and Sol was outstanding as well. And Rio was probably one of the best defenders in the last World Cup.

"That shows the competition, so I’ve got no qualms. I realise how good these players are and I’m delighted I still get picked in the squad amongst these players.

"Obviously I’m most comfortable with centre-back but I played left-back when we won European trophies at Liverpool under Gerard Houllier. And if you get a game for England anywhere it’s a great honour."
