England Senior International
England v Ukraine
Wednesday 18 August 2004, 7.45pm
St James’ Park, Newcastle
England will play Ukraine at St James’ Park in their only warm-up match before their 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign kicks off, The FA announced last week, and tickets go on general sale soon.
With Euro 2004 now over for the Three Lions, attentions turn to England’s road to Germany 2006, which starts in September with two difficult away games in quick succession.
Ukraine, boasting the attacking talents of Andriy Shevchenko and Sergei Rebrov, will provide the perfect test for England, as Sven assesses his squad’s early-season form.
England’s last game at St James’ Park was a 2-0 victory over Albania in 2001, to secure three vital World Cup-qualification points in front of a capacity crowd.
England Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said: "We’re looking forward to playing again in such a magnificent stadium, with such passionate fans.
"It will be vital preparation, only a short time before our two away games, against Austria and Poland in September."
