Reacting to the news, Sven said: "I am very sorry that Brian will not be part of the coaching team this summer, but I fully respect his decision and his professionalism.

"Brian has played a key role in qualifying for Euro 2004 and in the ongoing development of the team. He is a top-quality coach who is admired by everyone he works with."

Brian, who joined the England set-up in February 2003, recently underwent surgery. He said:

"Physically I don’t believe I could fully contribute to the level of coaching that will be required at the European Championship.

"Therefore I have spoken to Sven several times and have decided that it is in the interests of everyone involved with England team that I do not travel to Portugal.

"Working with England is an enormous pleasure and privilege, but it would not be fair on Sven or the players if I were to be at less than 100%. Of course I will be watching all the games and wishing England all the best."

His place in the coaching team will be filled on a temporary basis by his predecessor Steve McClaren, who has received clearance from his club Middlesbrough. McClaren was England assistant coach from November 2000 to September 2002.

He told us: "I am greatly looking forward to joining up with England again, although obviously I’m sorry that Brian has had to withdraw.

"It is tremendous honour to be involved with the national team, and I have always enjoyed my relationship with Sven and the rest of the coaches and players.

"Euro 2004 is a huge tournament and I know from my experience at the World Cup just how exciting it will be."

On teaming up with McClaren again, Sven added: "It is very good for England that we can bring in someone of Steve’s calibre at this late stage. I know Steve very well and respect his abilities as a top-class coach, and am looking forward to working with him again.

"We are fortunate that Steve is familiar with the players and the staff and understands how things work at international level.

"We came close in the World Cup two years ago. This year we want to return to England as European champions.

"Finally, I would like to express my sincere thanks to Middlesbrough Football Club for their co-operation. Steve is doing an excellent job there and everyone at The FA appreciates the great understanding shown by Steve Gibson and Keith Lamb at this time."

The England coaching staff at Euro 2004 will be Sven-Göran Eriksson, Tord Grip, Steve McClaren, Sammy Lee, Dave Sexton and Ray Clemence.

Meanwhile, David Platt is to leave The FA after Euro 2004 this summer.

Platt has been England Under-21 coach since succeeding Howard Wilkinson in July 2001 and is a part of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s scouting set-up in Portugal.

Sven said: "I am delighted that David has agreed to stay on until after the Euro 2004 championships. He will play an important role in our scouting network.

An FA spokesman added: "The FA are grateful for David’s efforts in developing players in the Under-21 team. His contribution as a former England player and captain should not be forgotten."

Platt’s record as Under-21 coach was 12 wins in 26 matches with six draws and eight defeats. He won 62 caps for England and was captain on 19 occasions.
