1 min: Frank Lampard, playing in the midfield holding role, confidently deals with his first two pieces of possession to set England moving forward.
5: Michael Owen pulls away at far post to head a David Beckham cross back across goal, but Junichi Inamoto clears over his own crossbar.
5: John Terry gets in a powerful header from the resulting corner, but keeper Seigo Narazaki makes a good save and the ball is scrambled off the line.
16: Lampard blasts a shot towards goal from 20 yards after Beckham's free-kick is half-cleared, but defender Yuji Nakazawa gets in a vital block.
21: Paul Scholes turns smartly on Beckham's pass and picks out Rooney on the right, but his cross is cut out by Keisuke Tsuboi.
22: Gerrard picks up possession and thumps in a low drive from 25 yards which Narazaki cannot hold and Owen pounces to slot home the opening goal from close range.
25: David James gets his first real taste of the action when he has to dive to his right to palm away Keiji Tamada's well struck 30-yard drive.
29: Shunsuke Nakamura tests James once again from long-range and the keeper manages to push the ball wide of the white shirts following up.
30: Shinji Ono chances his arm as England once again allow Japan time on the ball.
33: England have a major let off when Tsuneyasu Miyamoto meets a Nakamuro corner unmarked but heads wide.
37: Scholes gets a sight of goal after Gerrard picks him out, but drags his effort past the post.
41: Tamada finds space inside the box, but Ashley Cole covers across to make a fine tackle.
44: Scholes escapes with an untidy challenge on Alessandro Santos inside the penalty area as Japan are denied a spot-kick.
49: Beckham gets a chance to test Narazaki with a free-kick, but clips the defensive wall with his curling shot.
52: Gerrard receives Beckham's raking pass and lays the ball into the path of Lampard, who lashes a left-foot effort high over.
52: Inamoto, Nakamuro and Santos carve England apart down their left flank to set up Ono to equalise.
56: Rooney slides a neat reverse pass to Owen, but although he twists his way past Miyamoto, Narazaki saves with his feet.
59: Narazaki saves well again from a Beckham free-kick.
66: Neville makes a vital challenge to deny Nakamura a clean strike at goal after substitute Atsushi Yanagisawa splits the England defence.
69: Sol Campbell heads down an England corner but Rooney cannot connect as he tries to turn on the spot.
75: Nakamura exploits the space afforded him outside the penalty area to whistle a shot across the face of goal.
81: Santos forces a fine save from James after shooting from wide on the left from a Nakamura pass.
88: Campbell heads just wide after substitute Owen Hargreaves' corner is helped on to the far post.
90: Hargreaves takes aim from distance but curls his effort straight at the keeper.
