Frank Lampard takes on Everton midfielders Thomas Gravesen and Kevin Kilbane.
Lampard is top Lion
By Joe Bernstein. Monday, 19 April 2004.
Chelsea’s midfield general maintained his high standards against Everton on Saturday even when the rest of the side appeared to hit football’s equivalent of the Marathon Wall.
"Looked more likely to score than the forwards" - The Observer
"Closest Chelsea came was his shot against the bar" – Mail On Sunday
"Been given nod by everyone at Arsenal to be Player of the Year" – The People
It’s the time of season when fatigue can often set in – unless your name is Frank Lampard.
The Chelsea midfielder is famously not on Claudio Ranieri’s rotation list, not even when there is a Champions League semi-final coming up.
Lampard was yet again Chelsea’s best player in a 0-0 draw at home to Everton and twice came within inches of giving his side victory.
A terrific curling effort from the edge of the penalty area hit the crossbar after 25 minutes and he then hit the inside of a post with seven minutes left.
What is encouraging for Chelsea, and England, is that Lampard’s lung-bursting runs from midfield to get into the penalty area show no signs of abating.
While his Chelsea team-mates seemed off the boil, he was certainly not.
He would love to go into Euro 2004 with the first club trophy of his career, and where better to begin than the Champions League.
"It was disappointing not to beat Everton. We need to get back that strength we showed against Arsenal."
Fortunately for Ranieri, Lampard appears as strong as ever and he now joins Paul Scholes at the top of our league to find Lion of the Season.
And although Thierry Henry is clear favourite for Players’ Player of the Year, Lamps has reportedly got the votes of every Arsenal player, who can’t select their team-mate.
