"Sven congratulated me on getting into the squad and said 'well done' to me after training which was a nice feeling," revealed the 24-year-old when we caught up with him to find out how he enjoyed his first taste of life with England.

For someone who was not expecting to be here, Green admits that it's very much a case of taking things in, and enjoying being in such high-class footballing company.

"It's not that often that a player from outside the top league gets picked for England, so this wasn't something that I had anticipated in any way," says the man who has been one of the main reasons for Norwich's consistent success this season.

"I found out I had been called-up on Friday afternoon when Nigel Worthington told me. When I got the news, I was as surprised as anyone because I had not expected it this season.

"Nigel speaks to me a lot about football and about my game, so when he told me he wanted to have a word I still had no idea because it could have been about any number of things!

"Obviously it's pleasing for me on an individual basis and it's also very pleasing for the club, because it's a sign that we are doing well. It's great for everyone involved at Norwich. Iwan Roberts is a Welsh International and we have a couple of players on the fringes of the Scottish squad, and with me now being involved with England too, it's all very positive.

"The club's aim is obviously to ensure that we are playing against Premier League players week in and week out next season and, if we get there, it will obviously be a test for us to say the least."

Should Norwich win promotion, Green will have a word or two of warning for his team-mates about the quality of England's finest, now that he has experienced their skills at first-hand in training.

"The quality here with England is of a different level," Green says with a mixture of admiration for his peers and pride at having being involved. "The pace is a lot quicker and the level of technique is such that when people shoot or try something, they rarely fail to achieve what they are attempting to do. Everything has a purpose."

So what price a first England cap for Green in Gothenburg on Wednesday?

The man himself is the epitome of modest realism.

"My chances of playing on Wednesday are probably slim to none," he admits.

"There are four of us [goalkeepers] here and Ray Clemence has told me to enjoy it, do my best, and be involved. He advised me to get some experience from it, which is exactly what I am doing.

"I have a feeling of excitement being here and I am concentrating on enjoying it."
