There is a deserved first call-up for Manchester City's England Under-21 international Shaun Wright-Phillips after the 22-year-old's superb run of form this season.

Also in the squad for the first time under Sven are Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson, Norwich City's Robert Green and Tottenham's new signing Jermain Defoe.

Norwich City goalkeeper Green has showed himself to be one of the finest young 'keepers in the country. England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence holds the 24-year-old in high regards and the call-up is recognition of Green's major role in seeing the Canaries top the First Division.

In the absence of Liverpool striker Michael Owen, Jermain Defoe gets the nod from Sven after his great start at new club Tottenham.

Defoe, long admired as one of the best young natural finishers in the game, has extensive experience at England Under-21 level and will no doubt relish his participation in a first full England squad.

Former Aston Villa and Bolton midfielder Alan Thompson has been playing well for Celtic for much of the season. Used to playing in a variety of positions, he could be fielded on the left of England's midfield.
