Umbro Cup
08 June 1995
Elland Road, Leeds

In a heart-stopping finish, two goals in the final two minutes saved Terry Venables' nine-match unbeaten record as England Coach.

A Swedish team missing eight of their World Cup third-placers were seemingly home and dry at 3-1 when Gascoigne made the most telling contribution of his 27 minutes as a substitute by curling in a free-kick for his captain to head home.

Seconds later Darren Anderton crashed an unlikely equaliser beyond the stretch of Ravelli, the ball hitting both posts on the way in.

The Umbro Cup match was England's first home fixture away from Wembley since 1966 when Alf Ramsey's side played Poland at Everton's Goodison Park, and the Leeds crowd were treated to a night of high drama.

It was the newly capped Nottingham Forest central defender Colin Cooper, who was caught in possession in the tenth minute by the darting Larsson, the error leading to Sweden's opening goal.

Gudmundson moved into the space behind Barton to slap in a shot that the advancing Flowers beat away. Mild, following up, knocked a soft shot goalwards and it eluded everyone.

Mild, who played his club football for Servette in Switzerland, was in the right place again on 36 minutes as the unhappy Flowers spilled full-back Sundgrun's optimistic low strike from outside the box.

Ravelli, captaining gthe visitors in his 126th international - beating Peter Shilton's world record - kept England out with his unorthodox acrobatics until Teddy Sheringham swept in his first international goal three minutes before the break.

But Sweden caught their hosts cold just 23 seconds into the second half, Andersson controlling the ball on his chest and lobbing it neatly over the stranded Flowers.

It looked all over for England - until that amazing finale.
