Monday, 16 February 2004.
Leeds United striker Alan Smith is back in Sven-Goran Eriksson's England squad for this Wednesday's match away to Portugal.
The 23-year-old has come into some form recently and last week scored a brace in the Yorkshire side's 4-1 win over fellow Premiership strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Naturally Smith was pleased to return to the England fold but he realises that he still has plenty of work to do if he is to guarantee his place in Sven's squad for Euro 2004.
"I know that being picked for this squad doesn't guarantee anything," he says.
"If I want to get into the Euro 2004 squad, then I've got to do it for Leeds and get us out of the relegation zone.
"We still have a long way to go to do that but, if we can do it, then it should improve my England chances."
Smith will be hoping he can add to his tally of six caps as England take on Portugal in Lisbon for the first time since 1975.
